Series: Sword of Truth Series #1
I’ll admit, I’ve had these books for years, the entire set in fact, and for some reason I just haven’t picked them up and read them. I finally got about 3/4 of the way through this one and of course, LOVED IT about a year ago, but that was only after I had had a serious love affair with the television show that was based on this series, Legend of the Seeker, which I had watched long before that. Now, I know the show had flaws, but it did make me want to actually pick up the books again and read them because I missed the characters so much. But that brings me to my word of warning.
THE BOOKS ARE NOT LIKE THE SHOW. And in a way that is fantastic. I loved the show, it is still my favorite show to this day. But I also am very much in love with this book. The world building that Goodkind accomplishes is just fantastic and of course, his character depth is unparalleled among many other writers.
Of course, one of my particular reasons for loving this book (and series) so much has to do with the excellent writing of the love between the titular Seeker, Richard and his Confessor, Kahlan. These two are just magnetic on the page, together and apart. They drive the heart of the book, and I’m such a sucker for a good romance (I rarely read books without one). But the best thing about them is that it is obvious early on that there won’t be any stupid, love-triangle nonsense. Of course, love triangles have their place if done right, but most novels don’t need them if the writer can establish two fully fleshed main characters who have their own personalities separate from each other, but are wholly awesome when together and that is Richard and Kahlan. You never doubt for one second that these two are meant to be together, even when the odds are defiantly stacked against them.
I could write so much more about this book, and it’s only the first one. I just have to say that if you love reading about fantastic worlds, complex, well-rounded characters, magic and a beautiful love story, then this series is for you!
